EXHIBITION: CELEBRATING WOMEN ARTISTS OF COUNTY DOWN

Venue: DOWN COUNTY MUSEUM, Downpatrick

This exhibition displays a wide range of art works created by women artists from or living in County Down, and ranges from pieces by renowned professional artists, through work by teachers and educators, to the creations of gifted amateurs. Diverse examples of paintings, drawings, textile pieces and sculpture testify to the talent and versatility of County Down’s women artists.

This exhibition displays over one hundred artefacts including photographs, documents, objects, fine art, personal accessories and costume, underlining the important part played by women in the development of society in the area. Highlights include art by Margaret Clarke, originally from Newry and one of Ireland's most distinguished portrait painters, an autograph book which belonged to Margaret Anderson from Kilkeel who was a nurse in both World Wars and the dress worn by Mary Mc Aleese, President of Ireland from 1997 until 2011 at the State Banquet to mark the visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland in 2010.
