Location: Irish World Heritage Centre, 1 Irish Town Way, MANCHESTER, Greater Manchester M8 0AE United Kingdom

Date: Monday 8th January at 6.30pm

This event is free and open to the public. Click here to register.

The Irish Diaspora Foundation at the Irish World Heritage Centre is delighted to participate in the 2018 Illuminate Herstory Light Festival (Jan 5th-8th), Ireland’s annual new global light festival, celebrating women and girls across history, by hosting an informal celebration of Irish Nurses and Irish Women in Nursing in the UK on Monday 8th January, 6.30-8pm. We'd like to invite Irish women and women of Irish descent to join us for an informal social gathering to light up the fantastic contribution Irish nurses have made through the ages to nursing and nursing history in the UK.

We especially want to acknowledge the contribution of Irish women to the development of nursing in the UK and to the NHS, now and in the past. We will light up and celebrate the contributions of Elizabeth O’ Farrell, Dame Sheila Quinn, Mary Morris and Mary Hazard and we very much hope that current Irish nurses and nursing students in Manchester and Greater Manchester might join us on the evening.

We will also be supporting a project celebrating 70 years of the NHS by hosting an information stall that allows you to explore opportunities to record your experiences for this project.

LITHUANIA: Rues of our grandmothers

Location: Vilnius, Vilnius, Vilnius County LT - 06309 Lithuania

Date: Friday 5th January 2018 at 6pm

Theatre of Senses presents an illuminated polyphonic singing circle for women who survived the wars. This is a ritualistic singing circle and storytelling session, lit by the fire light and projections, about grandmothers and great grandmothers who survived the war to secretly cherish the stories of male heroes, protected their lovers and their memory, dreaming to plant rue plants on the graves of their beloved ones who died fighting or exiled. We feel it is time to honour their strength. We will gather to sing Lithuanian traditional polyphonic songs "sutartinės” and invite people of Vilnius and Kaunas to join the singing and share the stories of their heroes together with “Kadujo” and some other folk groups.
